TECH

THEATRE 1

Grade Level: 9 – 12               

Semester: 0.5 Credit 

Prerequisites: None

 

Students in Theatre 1 develop the beginning acting skills of a mature performer and obtain an overview of theatre at Grandview High School. Participation in class activities enhances the student’s self-confidence, poise, and creativity. Performance projects include, but are not limited to improvisation, storytelling, pantomime, monologues, and scenes. In addition to classwork, students are required to view two live theatre productions outside of class.

TECH THEATRE 1 (CTE)

      Grade Level: 9 – 12               

Semester: 0.5 Credit 

Prerequisites: None

Fee: $25.00

 

This course will introduce the student to the craft and technical skills of a theatrical production. Students will be instructed in an overview of the theatre hierarchy, theater safety, production process, set construction, scenic painting, stage lighting, costuming, and stage makeup. This course explores the proper procedures of serving on stage crews. Throughout the course, students will explore the intricacies of industry collaboration, analyze time management techniques, and gain insights into the impact of technology and industry trends on technical theater careers. The curriculum delves into the various roles and responsibilities within a technical crew, including designers, technical directors, stage management, and materials selection.

THEATRE 2

Grade Level: 9 – 12               

Semester: 0.5 Credit 

Prerequisites: Theatre 1

 

In Theatre 2, students expand on skills learned in Theatre 1. Emphasis will be given to script and character analysis through daily acting, improvisation, and discussion. Performance projects include, but are not limited to scene study, monologues, improvisation, voice, movement, and auditioning. In addition to classwork, students are required to view two live theatrical productions outside of the classroom.

TECH THEATRE 2 (CTE) 

Grade Level: 9 – 12               

Semester: 0.5 Credit 

Prerequisites: Tech Theatre 1

This course is a continuation of Theatre Technology I and offers a continuation of the basics of backstage work. Students will study prop design and construction, sound engineering, scenic design, and stage management. Students will also delve into lighting design and implementation, learning to interpret plots, identify equipment needs, and execute installations Sound design and implementation are explored with a focus on interpreting sound plots, understanding equipment requirements, and patching in audio components. Students are required to see one live theatrical production outside of the classroom and write a reflection on their experience. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in some of the opportunities in Technical Theatre for the after-school productions each year.

   THEATRE 3 

Grade Level: 10 – 12               

Semester: 1.0 Credit 

Prerequisites: Theatre 2

 

Theatre 3 is an advanced course in acting. Students build on the skills developed in Theatre 1 & 2. Course work includes Viewpoints (movement-based acting), improvisation, methods of acting, history of theatre and script development. In addition, students are required to view two live theatrical productions outside the classroom per semester and are strongly encouraged to participate in the Colorado State Thespian Conference.

Prerequisites: Theatre 2 and instructor approval


This course is a continuation of Theatre Technology II and gives students work-based learning opportunities to refine the skills they have learned in Tech 1 and 2 and work on realized theatre production projects at an advanced level. Emphasis will be on leading stage crews, designing theoretical and realized productions, organization, and time management. Students will refine their leadership abilities as they mount productions in the GHS theatre, run live events/concerts after school, and build their resume and portfolio of work. This course provides advanced theater design technology students with instruction in advanced techniques and processes. Areas of study include portfolio design, as well as the design and implementation of lighting, audio, and scenic. Additionally, focus on stage and house management. Exploration of career opportunities in theatre technology is also emphasized. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have acquired entry-level skills for employment and be prepared for postsecondary education focused in technical theater.

THEATRE 4: DIRECTING AND ACTING (CTE)

Grade Level: 11 – 12              

Year: 1.0 Credit

Prerequisites: Theatre 3 and instructor approval

 

Theatre 4 allows students to pursue the fundamentals of stage direction. It emphasizes the artistic and collaborative development of auditioned acting students. Scenes are drawn from the Greeks, Shakespeare, Moliere, Chekhov, Williams, and Wilson, among others. Coursework may include the following: directing and advanced acting, script and character analysis, and design concepts. Students refine the skills studied in Theatre 1, 2 and 3.. In addition to classwork, students are required to view two live theatrical productions outside of the classroom and are encouraged to participate in the State Thespian Conference.

Prerequisites: Audition only

 

This audition-only course is for the advanced theatre student. It emphasizes the artistic and collaborative development of auditioned, advanced students. Play production is the core of this class. Students may be performing the following dramatic genres: murder mystery, children’s theatre, improvisation, Shakespeare, 1-Acts and/or ensemble production. Students are required to participate in the evening productions, which will be produced at least once a quarter. Participation in the State Thespian Conference, as well as play production, is strongly encouraged.
